Touloucouna, Healing & Antibacterial

Touloucouna, also referred to as Carapa procer, is an extraordinary fruit, which can be found in Casamance, a region in southern Senegal in Africa. This outstanding plant is very well known for its many health and especially its beauty benefits.

Touloucouna leaves are rich with minerals: they make a fortifying herbal tea, commonly drunk by women after giving birth. The brew from the bark is sour and curative. It can help to cure chest pain, kidney diseases and hernias, in their early stages. The leaves are traditionally used as an infusion or decoction (they are very, very bitter) to lower fever including viral infections or malaria, or to treat diarrhea and accelerate wound healing.

Touloucouna oil, which is extracted from the seeds of the wonder growth, has long held a prominent place in traditional medicine as well, due to its many healing properties: It is used in ethnopharmacology for coughs, colds, ear infections, digestion, fever, flu, insect bites, lice, worms, parasites, repelling and killing insects, constipation, hepatitis and was once even used for mummification!

The powerful oil has anti-inflammatory, invigorating, soothing, healing, emollient, nourishing and analgesic qualities. Used as a massage oil, Touloucouna oil has the miraculous effect to cure muscle ache, stomach ache and several skin diseases including eczema or psoriasis. It’s also effective to fight arthritis, swelling as well as rashes, and is equally very useful for killing bacteria and treating small wounds or bruises, boils, and ulcers.

Aside from its healing powers, you may want to consider to include Touloucouna oil in your daily beauty routine overall: It contains high quantities of essential fatty acids, including oleic, palmitic, stearic, linoleic acids, as well as Vitamin E, that help to protect, moisturize as well as soften your skin. For generations the oil has been used as a natural way to plump and smoothen skin, improving firmness while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Its antioxidant properties fight the so called “free radicals” to prevent the skin from aging prematurely, to block against skin cancers, and to protect the skin from reactive species of oxygen (a byproduct of normal metabolism of oxygen).

Touloucouna is also an excellent oil for your hair. It is the perfect conditioner to regenerate, restore and smoothen your hair. When applied to your scalp slightly warmed, the oil stimulates better blood flow, which is a strong factor in growing healthier hair that’s more resilient to breakage, split ends, and dehydration. If you suffer from an itchy scalp, the powerful properties of the oil work soothing and promote the repair of dry skin.
